The iconic Churchill Downs, renowned for hosting the Kentucky Derby, has temporarily suspended its spring meet due to escalating safety apprehensions. This decision follows a concerning string of equine fatalities – a dozen in all – throughout the previous month.
Although races slated for June 3rd and 4th will continue as scheduled, all subsequent events have been relocated to Ellis Park Racing & Gaming in Henderson, Kentucky. This measure will facilitate a comprehensive evaluation of all safety procedures and racing surfaces at Churchill Downs.
Both the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority are currently undertaking inquiries into the root cause of these tragic incidents, but as of yet, no unifying factor has been identified. Churchill Downs CEO, Bill Carstanjen, recognized the seriousness of the circumstances, remarking that the recent events are “extremely troubling and intolerable.”
As we diligently investigate the root of the recent horse racing incidents, achieving a comprehensive understanding of all contributing factors necessitates further examination. We are dedicated to utilizing this period to enhance the track’s condition, bolster our safety protocols, and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to upholding the sport’s integrity.”
The summer meet in Kentucky, hosted by Ellis Park, is slated to commence on July 7th and conclude on August 27th, 2023.
The reinforced safety protocols implemented by Churchill Downs earlier this week will remain in full force at Ellis Park.
