Australia has initiated a novel program to address gambling addiction. Known as BetStop, this nationwide self-exclusion registry empowers individuals to restrict their access to all licensed internet and telephone betting services. This mechanism, mirroring similar systems operational in various nations, forms a component of a broader consumer safeguard structure designed to tackle the surge in online wagering.

Enrolling in BetStop is cost-free and grants individuals the autonomy to self-exclude for durations spanning from a quarter year to permanently. Mandatory participation for all licensed gaming entities means they are obligated to bar anyone registered and cease all promotional communications to them. Moreover, these companies must return any outstanding funds or unresolved wagers to users prior to account closure.

Minister of Communications Michelle Rowland highlighted the program’s possible influence, asserting that BetStop will be transformative by offering at-risk Australians the assistance needed to escape gambling’s grasp.

Australian telecom providers must now feature the BetStop self-ban registry in all their communications, including promotional materials. This represents a substantial advance in safeguarding consumers, simplifying the process for individuals to temporarily halt gambling activities when necessary.

Minister Rishworth emphasized the government’s considerable efforts over the past year to address problem gambling. Managed by IXUP Limited and supervised by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), the BetStop program will guarantee that internet gambling operators adhere to the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.

Furthermore, New South Wales has introduced a penalty framework to target deceptive gambling advertisements. The objective is to mitigate the detrimental effects associated with online gambling and foster a more secure environment for all.
